Is it a play? Is it a musical? Or is it a circus? None of the above… It’s even better!
I’m thrilled to announce (for those of you who have been living under a rock while I’ve been in Africa), that my dear friend West End Wilma is finally presenting The Wilma Awards.
“People have been telling me for years that I should do The Wilma Awards but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right. If I’m going to do something in life, I’m going to do it properly! And if there’s one thing I know how to do it’s throw a good party!” ~ West End Wilma
Yes, that’s right – this beyond stagey event will see actors, musicals and even theatres go head to head in a public vote that will decide the winners.
I’m not giving much away am I? But I can reveal that Wilma, myself and some other super amazing reviewers will be sitting down for a lengthy session of drinking thinking, to work out our final shortlist.
I know there are some people out there thinking, pfft it’s a schew in for my favourite musical, but be warned… The categories are not just run of the mill everybody’s already done that before categories.
The final list of categories is as follows:
• Best West End Show
• Best Fringe Production
• Best Touring Production (sponsored by Churchill Theatre Bromley)
• Most Underrated West End Show
• Best Supporting Cast Member
• Best Theatre Blog (sponsored by IOGIG Online Services)
• Rising Star Award (sponsored by Planet Hollywood)
• Most Welcoming Venue
• Best Take-over in a Role
• Lifetime Achievement in Theatre
The awards will take place on Friday 7th November at an exclusive invite-only ceremony at Freedom Bar in Soho (Solero Cocktails – just saying) hosted by the delightful Tim McArthur.
Knowing Wilma’s fondness for tea, guests will be treated to a fabulous afternoon tea with Wilma (courtesy of The Full English) while they wait (with baited breath) for the winners to be revealed and also witness some incredible live performances, although sadly Wilma and I will not be performing our world-famous duet.
Public voting will open on 1 October 2014 and run for two weeks at westendwilma.com
